TEACHING FOR CIVIC EMPOWERMENT IN THE ELEMENTARY YEARS

Dr. Stephanie Serriere will offer five pillars for the “civically-minded” elementary teacher to promote civic empowerment in the elementary years. Her workshop will illuminate these pillars with research-backed practices for promoting and integrating civic education in a classroom ethos and curriculum. Some practices she will share include using “photo-talks” to explore classroom issues, civic action projects, student-created magazines (called civic ‘zines) on student chosen issues, and applications of the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) framework for elementary level. Guided by key questions for practice, teachers will have time to network and share ideas.
Intended Audience: All elementary-level educators and administrators; special focus on Social Studies Education

Parents Providing Support: Helping Our Children Return to School

This online panel discussion with renowned featured speakers from the upcoming National Social and Emotional Learning Conference, online May 17-19, 2021, is available to help parents with students returning or who have just returned to school – whether virtually, hybrid or live. Educators, school staff and administrators looking for ways to support parents are also welcome.

Through the lens of social and emotional learning, our panelists will share thoughts, strategies and practices for helping our students returning to school during this challenging time in history.

– Dr. Luvelle Brown, Superintendent of the Ithaca City School District in New York, author and award-winning educational leader, will offer his advice as a school superintendent.
– Dr. Ed Dunkleblau, internationally recognized social and emotional learning scholar and speaker, will provide ways for parents to apply social and emotional learning approaches in the home.
– Elizabeth Cushing, President of Playworks, will share ways to use social and emotional learning approaches through play.

The Importance of Social-Emotional Learning With the Reopening of Afterschool Programs

As we re-open afterschool programs, we need to take into consideration the social-emotional needs of youth upon reuniting. We will explore Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning’s re-entry tool “Reunite, Renew and Thrive: Social and Emotional Learning Roadmap for Reopening School,” as well as the pre-K to 12 Career Ready Standards. In addition, we will share daily curricular strategies to support SEL.
